The internet has been abuzz around the yet-to-be-revealed successor to 2017’s Nintendo Switch this week, with leaks coming in every day from all kinds of sources including anonymous Reddit users and well-known peripheral makers. I’ve spent the past few days parsing through the landslide of rumors and “insider” information to present all the rumors about the Nintendo Switch 2 that are actually credible and worth your attention.

However, before we get started, it is important to note that Nintendo has remained mum on everything regarding the new Switch console, save for the fact that the hardware will support backwards compatibility with the original Switch console. So with that in mind, on with the rumors!

4 Nintendo Switch 2 reveal may arrive as early as January

Nintendo may aim for a launch date of June

Earlier this year, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa announced that the next-generation Nintendo Switch will be revealed “within this fiscal year”. With this in mind, Nintendo Switch 2’s reveal should come before the deadline of March 31st, 2025. However, current rumors suggest the reveal could happen as early as next month. Three different sources, with varying levels of credibility, corroborate the notion that Nintendo Switch 2 could be shown by mid-January.

Insider Samsus Hunter posed the notion that Nintendo Switch 2 may be revealed before “DK”, a likely reference to Donkey Kong Country Returns HD. This game is scheduled to launch January 16th, 2025. Reddit leaker Technical-Manager921 also claims an official reveal is scheduled for mid-January. The user adds that the reveal was “delayed 2 months cause of supply chain issues.”

As for the release of the console itself, Nintenduo reported that six sources from partnering development studios have said Nintendo Switch 2’s launch is scheduled for June or early July. When it does arrive, it’s expected that the hardware may cost around $399 to $449.

Dbrand may have outed the design and scale of the Nintendo Switch 2

Nintendo Switch 2 Dbrand render

Dbrand

If you’re unfamiliar with Dbrand, it’s an accessory company that never plays by the rules. The company which went out of its way to design its own PS5 faceplates, angering Sony, and has now has made several social media posts and product listing pages showing what they claim to be the Nintendo Switch 2 design. On its website, Dbrand posted a page for the ‘Killswitch 2’ case. The landing page features an in-motion render of what could very well be an accurate representation of the Nintendo Switch 2. Based on the mockups, the new hardware looks incredibly similar to the console we all know and love. However, the Nintendo Switch 2 does look to be larger in size. There’s also a new button featured underneath the right Joy-Con.

It’s possible the final design could feature two USB-C ports, one on the bottom for the dock and one on the top to charge while you play it in handheld mode.

Another potential look of the hardware comes from the YouTube channel SwitchUp. In a video showing off a mockup, it’s alleged that the Nintendo Switch 2 is a bit wider and taller than the original kit. It’s much more similar in stature to the Steam Deck. It’s possible the final design could feature two USB-C ports, one on the bottom for the dock and one on the top to charge while you play it in handheld mode. The dock itself claimed to have two USB-A ports, an HDMI port, ethernet, and one USB-C. The dock is also reported to be rated for 45W, making it able to handle significantly more power.

Rumors indicate that Nintendo is tapping Nvidia for its system-on-chip processing power

It feels strange to even type, but the Nintendo Switch has been in our lives for seven years. While I still adore the hardware, it’s time for a well-deserved bump in processing power. It’s rumored Nintendo Switch 2 may support an updated version of Nvidia’s Tegra X1 chip. According to RedGamingTech, the new hardware could feature an eight-core Cortex-A78AE processor. This would likely support 10 streaming multiprocessors, 8GB of RAM and just 64GB of eMMC storage. Previous reports also claim that the new hardware supports a larger 8-inch LCD display.

Unfortunately, these specs mean that the Nintendo Switch 2 won’t be as powerful as a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X. However, with a processor boost and a new chipset, the upcoming hardware will be able to run games with much smoother framerates. It could also more easily support 60fps, something Switch players have been begging for.

Out with the old, in with the new. Nintendo Switch 2 is rumored to be adopting a magnetic system for its new Joy-Con controllers that will feature a button on the back of each to seemingly lock them in place. In addition, these updated controllers will reportedly have a new ‘C’ button, per the aforementioned Dbrand leaks, and will have Hall-effect joysticks, eliminating the dreaded drift that has plagued the original Joy-Cons.
